STIM - Star Trek Italia Magazine

Interpreta uno dei personaggi di maggior spessore drammatico nelle ultime stagioni di Deep Space Nine.
Sarà presente alla STICCON 2003, insieme ad altri eroi della nostra amata saga.
È un attore da lungo tempo affermato, sia in teatro, che nel cinema, che nell'universo televisivo.
Casey Biggs, alias Damar.

Casey Patrick Biggs è nato il 4 aprile 1955 a Toledo nell'Ohio (USA), da famiglia di origini irlandesi.
Personaggio di indubbio eclettismo, frequenta la Central Catholic High School di Toledo; nonostante dimostri eccezionali doti di calciatore, è sul palcoscenico che meglio esprime la sua personalità. Perciò, abbandonate le pur sentite velleità calcistiche, si unisce giovanissimo alla compagnia teatrale del Toledo Repertory Theater sotto la guida illuminata di Roy Fluhrer, che diventa suo mentore non solo in ambito attoriale, ma nella vita stessa.
Mentre ancora frequenta la Central Catholic High School, Casey diviene amico di Frank Fisher, un produttore hollywoodiano, che lo convince a sostenere un'audizione presso la famosissima Julliard School di New York. L'esito è brillante e dopo il diploma dell'high school (ottenuto nel 1973), Casey trascorre quattro anni tra le pareti di una delle più importanti e rinomate scuole d'arte del mondo.
Nel 1977 consegue il BFA alla Julliard e immediatamente ha le prime scritture come guest star in alcune sitcom televisive; ma il teatro resta la sua passione principale, ed è in questo ambito che comincia una interessante carriera sia come attore che come regista.

TEATRO

Le prime produzioni importanti arrivano nel 1980, anno in cui prende parte a cinque rappresentazioni, tre delle quali con la sua regia: An Evening With Shakespeare, Macbeth e Prince of Players; nel 1981 recita, tra l'altro, in A Midsummer Night Dream di Shakespeare e The Dubliners.
La svolta più significativa della sua carriera avviene con l'ingresso nella compagnia Arena Stage di Washington: nel 1983 riceve la sua prima nomination agli Helen Hayes Award con la commedia Happy End di Brecht e recita in Mass Appeal di Bill C. Davis e nella Bisbetica Domata di Shakespeare, per cui riceverà un'altra nomination nel 1985.
Sempre nell'85 partecipa al musical The Cradle Will Rock (di Marc Blitzstein) e due canzoni da lui interpretate fanno parte dell'album; nei due anni successivi recita in All the King's Men di Fulton Oursler (1986) e in Exception and the Rule (1987).
Nel 1988 riceve un'altra nomination agli Helen Hayes Award per la sua performance in Elmer Gantry, commedia di Patrick Kearney, e nei cinque anni successivi lavora in numerose produzioni teatrali, tra cui il Giulio Cesare di Shakespeare (1991), It's a wonderful Life (1991), Oleanna (1993) e A Streetcar Named Desire (1993).
Nel 1994 ha il ruolo di Ulisse nell'Odissea di Derek Walcott (vedi foto a sinistra) e l'anno seguente è in Dark Rapture di Eric Overmyer; nel 1997 dirige altre tre rappresentazioni, Painted Woman di Frederic Arnold Krummer, Hedda Gabler di Ibsen e la commedia Beach Boys e recita in Pride's Crossing di Victor Wolfson e in State of the Union e Speed-the-plow di David Mamet.
Ancora, nel 2000 dirige l'Amleto di Shakespeare e nel 2001 Il gabbiano di Ibsen; verso la fine del 2000 Casey, insieme agli amici Marc Alaimo (Gul Dukat in DS9) e Jeffrey Combs (Weyoun e Brunt in DS9) dà vita a uno show teatrale (What Shakespeare Leaves Behind) che riflette in modo ironico e scanzonato l'amore e la consapevolezza dei tre nei confronti dell'inestimabile contributo portato al teatro e all'umanità dall'immortale drammaturgo inglese. La prima è a Los Angeles ed è seguita da numerose repliche in vari teatri, a diverse convention trek e addirittura su una nave da crociera.
Ogni replica, immancabilmente, termina con la lettura di questo passo, volutamente lasciato in inglese in quanto è un collage di formule shakespeariane entrate a far parte del linguaggio comune e praticamente intraducibili (e ciò è confermato da uno dei più importanti traduttori italiani, Pier Paolo Ronchetti; per operare una resa adeguata bisognerebbe - per capirci - rendere il tutto con altrettante frasi dantesche entrate nell'uso comune della lingua italiana):

"If you cannot understand my argument, and declare 'It's Greek to me', you are quoting Shakespeare; if you claim to be more sinned against than sinning, you are quoting Shakespeare; if you recall your salad days, you are quoting Shakespeare; if you act more in sorrow than in anger; if your wish is farther to the thought; if your lost property has vanished into thin air, you are quoting Shakespeare; if you have ever refused to budge an inch or suffered from green-eyed jealousy, if you have played fast and loose, if you have been tongue-tied, a tower of strength, hoodwinked or in a pickle, if you have knitted your brows, made a virtue of necessity, insisted on fair play, slept not one wink, stood on ceremony, danced attendance (on your lord and master), laughed yourself into stitches, had short shrift, cold comfort or too much of a good thing, if you have seen better days or lived in a fool's paradise - why, be that as it may, the more fool you, for it is a foregone conclusion that your are (as good luck would have it) quoting Shakespeare; if you think it is early days and clear out bag and baggage, if you think it is high time and that that is the long and short of it, if you believe that the game is up and that truth will out even if it involves your own flesh and blood, if you lie low till the crack of doom because you suspect foul play, if you have your teeth set on edge (at one fell swoop) without rhyme or reason, then - to give the devil his due - if the truth were known (for surely you have a tongue in your head) you are quoting Shakespeare; even if you bid me good riddance and send me packing, if you wish I was dead as a door-mail, if you think I am an eyesore, a laughing stock, the devil incarnate, a stony-hearted villain, bloody-minded or a blinking idiot, then -by Jove! O Lord! Tut, tut! for goodness' sake! what the dickens! but me no buts - it is all one to me, for you are quoting Shakespeare."

Lo scorso anno ha diretto Riccardo III e Stand up Shakespeare.

CINEMA E TELEVISIONE

Numerose sono le partecipazioni di Casey - dal 1977 in avanti - a film e telefilm, con ruoli di diversa importanza, sebbene sia nel 1989 che approda a Hollywood e gira il suo primo film importante, Alamo: the Price of Freedom. Precedentemente era apparso in alcuni film per la TV, tra cui The Great Wallendas (1978), The Beasts Are on the Streets (1978), Flying High (1978) e Brave New World (1980).
Nel 1993 compare nel film campione d'incassi Rapporto Pelican insieme a Julia Roberts e Denzel Washington. Nel 1994 è guest star in Melrose Place e nell'ormai mitico La signora in giallo e l' anno dopo recita in Bodily Harm con Linda Fiorentino.

Nel 1996 torna al grande cinema con Nome in codice: Broken Arrow insieme a John Travolta e Christian Slater (per la regia di John Wood), inoltre viene nominato per l'ennesima volta agli Helen Hayes Award per Long Days Journey into Night.
Il 1996 segna anche il suo ingresso nel mondo di Star Trek, dove interpreta per la prima volta il cardassiano Damar nella serie Deep Space Nine. La sua avventura trek finirà nel 1999 con la fine della serie.
Nel 1997 partecipa al film Shadow Conspiracy con Charlie Sheen e Donald Sutherland e l'anno seguente interpreta John Turner nella serie Legacy e il sindaco Harold Warren nel film TV Thirst. Nel 2000 recita nel film Beyond Suspicion con Jeff Goldblum e nel film TV Ali: un eroe americano, mentre nel 2001 prende parte al film TV Just Ask My Children e alle famose serie televisive ER e X-Files. L'anno scorso, infine, è apparso nel film Dragonfly - Il segno della libellula, con Kevin Costner.

Sul personaggio che lo ha reso famoso fra i trekker - a proposito del quale vi rimando al mio articolo apparso sullo STIM Anno 3, N° 10 - e sul suo approccio con l'universo di Star Trek, Casey rilascia alcune interessanti dichiarazioni:
"Mi chiamarono apposta per fare un provino per la parte e io pensai 'Ma cosa ci faccio qui? Chiunque potrebbe fare questo ruolo!'. Poi mi chiamarono una seconda volta. Sapevano che avrebbero sviluppato il personaggio anche se probabilmente non sapevano ancora come."
"Penso che Damar sia un vero soldato, un patriota. Quando interpreti un personaggio cerchi tutti gli elementi che gli stanno intorno e completi ciò che ti sembra mancare. Non c'erano molte informazioni su Damar, così ad ogni copione che mi veniva presentato facevo le scelte che mi sembravano giuste per un giusto sviluppo del personaggio. Penso che la mia recitazione abbia dato agli autori molte idee sullo sviluppo futuro di Damar."
"Gli scrittori non sapevano in che direzione fosse diretto il personaggio Damar. Penso che siano rimasti stupiti essi stessi per il modo in cui è finito: un eroe di guerra. Non sono particolarmente felice per il modo in cui Damar è morto, ma sono contento che sia morto da eroe. Penso di capire perché sia stato sacrificato."
(A proposito del trucco cardassiano) "È molto difficile recitare con tutto quel trucco addosso. Non ti accorgi neanche se qualcosa ti passa sotto il naso."
(A proposito del cast di DS9) "Mi sono trovato molto bene con tutti gli attori, ho fatto amicizie che terrò per sempre. Marc Alaimo e Jeff Combs per citarne due."

Casey si è cimentato anche come scrittore, in quanto sembra abbia scritto la sceneggiatura per una serie che spera venga prodotta da un grande network. Non ha figli pur essendo stato sposato due volte (una delle quali con Roxann Dawson, l'attrice che interpreta B'Elanna Torres in Voyager). Casey suona la chitarra ed è un fan di Crosby, Stills and Nash, è un ottimo ballerino (adora la salsa e il tango) e un bravo cuoco (ha un debole per la cucina italiana).
